I think Linux is the operating system of the next decade, and we have four linux boxes at home right now. Linux is much more stable than most other consumer computer systems, and it's free. So you can copy it from your friends without breaking any laws. And linux works good on older hardware.I prefer the Debian distribution, but many people like Redhat, or one of the other distributions, and that is fine. Debian has an apt-get system which greatly simplifies upgrading and maintainence of software packages. Apt-get is what "windows update" wants to be when it grows up ;-).
I also have used Solaris at work, and FreeBSD at home. These are both very good UNIX operating systems with low cost options available.

The main obsessive hobby at this point in my life is trading legitimate concert recordings. I've got a lot of Grateful Dead and other "Jam Bands", but I've also got a little of everything. Check out my showlist, and see if you can't suddenly find something you can't live without. And remember our motto "Making the world a better place, one disk at a time!"
My daughter Elizabeth spends way too much at the barn.
My father and I went moose hunting back in 1999. Here are the pictures. My friends and I rode in the Tour-de-Cure for the American Diabetes Association. Here are our pictures.
